Sonners Contracting was founded with a simple mission: deliver the highest quality roofing work with the kind of honesty and care you'd expect from a neighbor. Here's how we got here.

Raised in the Business

Sonners Contracting founder Dave Sonner grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, in a household where roofing wasn't just a job — it was the family trade. His mother worked as the office administrator for a large Denver roofing company, while his father served as the company's lead salesman and project manager. Dave spent his childhood summers in the field alongside them: generating leads, drawing up roofing diagrams, and even chasing hailstorms across the Midwest. By the time he was a teenager, he'd learned to read insurance adjustments firsthand — and started selling his own roofing projects at age 16. At 17, he set off solo for Gillette, Wyoming, to chase his first hailstorm on his own.

After high school and through college, Dave spent several years working in entertainment production. But the roofing industry pulled him back in his mid-20s, and he returned to work for the same company where his father was still selling. Shortly after marrying his wife, Kathryn, he was back on the road chasing storms and opening roofing offices. By 2013, Dave felt he had the experience and knowledge to go out on his own — and Sonners Contracting was born.

Building Something From Nothing

Dave started the company from his Littleton apartment with no capital beyond a $5,000 credit card. Roofing is notoriously competitive to break into, thanks to its low barrier to entry, so Dave leaned on his broader construction and remodeling background to stay afloat — taking on odd jobs for other companies and interior remodel projects like bathrooms, kitchens, and basement finishes. After formally incorporating Sonners Contracting in 2015, he made the decision to focus exclusively on roofing, gutters, and exterior storm repair.

Deep Expertise in Insurance Adjusting

To better serve homeowners navigating storm damage claims, Dave completed technical training to become a licensed independent insurance adjuster, earning credentials in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. In 2016, he worked as an adjuster in San Antonio following a storm that brought five-inch hail and multiple tornadoes to the city. He also worked the Denver storm of 2017 — one of the most financially damaging hailstorms in state history. That firsthand experience on the insurance side of the industry remains one of Sonners Contracting's core advantages for clients working through claims today.

Giving Back, Near and Far

Dave has also put his roofing and construction skills to work in service of others around the world. At just 15, he installed a modified bitumen roof on a church in Ensenada, Mexico, alongside a fellow missions team member. He's traveled twice to Rustenburg, South Africa — first to build small shelters for homeless residents, and later to help complete construction of an orphanage on the city's outskirts. Separately, he's taken on the logistical challenge of installing metal roofing in Roatan, Honduras, coordinating material procurement and shipping from the U.S. across the island.

Roots in Castle Rock, and a New Chapter in Fort Collins

In 2016, Dave and Kathryn moved from Littleton to Castle Rock, Colorado, following the birth of their first son. Dave got involved with the Dads of Castle Rock charity group, and that community involvement helped establish Sonners Contracting as a trusted local Castle Rock brand. Over the next decade, the family grew to include two more children while Dave continued building the company. In September 2025, the Sonner family set out on a new adventure, relocating to Fort Collins, Colorado, to expand the business and explore all that Northern Colorado has to offer.
